Opanin Kofi Adama, a cocoa farmer at Kofi Krakyekrom near Kasapin in the Asunafo North Municipality, has appealed to the government for protection against armed robbers.
He said the need for such protection was necessary, especially during the main cocoa crop season in October when the farmers received payments for their produce.
Opanin Adama, 76, made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Monday on behalf of cocoa farmers at Camp 15, Kwaadwomo, Bediako, Kasapin. He said the recent reported cases of armed robbery in the Brong-Ahafo Region and other parts of the country called for adequate security measures in cocoa growing areas to protect the farmers.
Opanin Adama said the only means of transport in these areas were Metro Mass Transport (MMT) buses and therefore suggested that government should make efforts to ensure the presence of security taskforce detailed on the buses during the main cocoa season.
