Two suspects have been arrested for selling illegal firearms and dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, in separate operations at Pokuase and James Town in Accra.

While George Kamatu, 41, was apprehended at Pokuase, Michael Lawson, 29, was arrested at James Town in Accra, on Tuesday night.

Lawson was arrested around 9 a.m. after a police dispatch team had spotted him at the Palladium area, near James Town, when he was about to sell a pistol and two live cartridges at a corner.

Immediately he spotted the police in their patrol vehicle, Lawson was said to have abandoned the pistol and fled.

The police, who had then spotted Lawson from afar, pursued him, leading to his arrest and the subsequent retrieval of the firearm.

Kamatu, on the other hand, was arrested around 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday after the police had received information about his escapades.

A search in his room led to the discovery of one AK 47 rifle, with its magazine, and a small quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The Accra Regional Police Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Frank Adufati, said the two suspects were arrested after the police had received information from their intelligence unit and carried out thorough investigations.

Kamatu and Lawson are currently in police custody, awaiting the completion of investigations for possible prosecution.
