Government has directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to work closely with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to resolve waste engulfing towns and cities.

“The challenge of waste management should receive the needed attention from the agency and government has directed that all MMDAs cooperate with the agency to solve this problem,” Dr Joe Oteng-Ajei, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, said on Wednesday.

The launch provided an opportunity for the EPA to lay bare its initiatives and to raise public awareness on the many environmental challenges facing the nation.

Deforestation, coastal and marine resource degradation, destruction of biodiversity pollution of all forms among others influenced the establishment of the EPA.

He said government has approved the new Environmental Policy and the Climate Change Policy to guide the EPA in carrying out its activities and to facilitate effective coordination of implementation of the policies by relevant stakeholders.

Dr Oteng-Ajei urged the agency to incorporate the international environmental protocols and conventions into the national laws to enhance international cooperation.

He said the ministry would continue to give the agency all the needed support and guidance in this regard and ensure that its lives up to its mandate.
