Takoradi Circuit Court B presided over by Judge Charles Nimako on Thursday sentenced Baba Salium, a labourer, to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing 52 wrappers of Indian hemp weighing 67 grammes without authority.

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Felix Danku, said at about 3.00 p.m. on April 24 last year, while a Prison's officer was supervising prisoners who were working at the Police rented quarters at Effia, he spotted the accused person around.

He said the officer became suspicious and arrested the accused and a search conducted on him revealed 52 wrappers of Indian hemp.

Chief Inspector Danku said when questioned, the accused claimed ownership of the wrappers and pointed at one of the convicts as the one who gave him money to buy for him.

He said the accused then resisted arrest vehemently and called four of his colleagues who attacked the Prison's Officer. The Police around then intervened and rescued him and accused was arrested.

Chief Inspector Danku said the exhibit was sealed in the presence of the accused and sent to the Police forensic laboratory in Accra for analytical examination and report.

He said the exhibit tested positive to cannabis weighing 67 grammes and the accused was charged.
