The City of Columbia in South Carolina of the United States and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to partner and cooperate in development.

The MOU was signed after Mr Steve K. Benjamin, Mayor of Columbia had paid a courtesy called on Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, AMA Chief Executive, in Accra.

Addressing the assembly members, Mr Benjamin said: “Ghana is seen as a leading light for the rest of the world because it has established a strong democracy.”

He said Americans have seen the selfless work that the AMA is doing to bring new life for the people of Accra.

Mr Benjamin expressed the hope that the union would bring growth and deepen cooperation between Ghana and US.

He noted that his short stay in Ghana had gone a long way in cementing the relationship between South Carolina and Ghana.

Dr Vanderpuije enumerated some of the benefits as exchange of students and teachers, assemblymen, businessmen under the Benedict College International Legislators Exchange Programme.

He said government remains committed to facilitate policy development aimed at ensuring that the Better Ghana Agenda becomes a success.

“We look forward to continuing our close relationship with the City of Columbia to ensure that every aspect of city management will flourish.”

The AMA boss inducted the Mayor of Columbia into the assembly as an honorary member.

In another development, Dr Vanderpuije and Mr Benjamin jointly inaugurated the fifth Millennium School block at Odorkor in the Okaikwei South District at the cost of GH ₵800,000 funded from the Social Investment Fund.

Mrs Rosetta Addison Sackey, Metropolitan Director of Education, who expressed gratitude to the AMA said the key ingredient of quality education is the availability of requisite infrastructure to enhance effective teaching and learning.
