Most parts of Accra and its environs on Wednesday slept in darkness, following an explosion at the Achimota substation of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
The explosion which occurred around 7:30pm left major parts of the capital in darkness. The outage reached as far as Tema and parts of the Akuapim range.
Confirming the explosion at the substation to Citi News, Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Grid Company (Gridco), Albert Quainoo said unfortunately the problem we have is coming from our part of the substation. We had a problem with one of the lines feeding into the substation. It got isolated from the tower and the resultant effect was flashes on the line.
The feedback into the system resulted in us switching all the power generations from the generators in Tema thats why we have a greater part of the capital and some parts beyond in darkness.
We are working to isolate the faulted line to restore power to consumers.
There have been increasing calls from Accra into Citi Fm asking what may have resulted in the power outage. There were calls from Osu, Dzorwulu, Adenta, Madina, parts of Kasoa, Abeka and as far Tema.
Albert Quianoo says the power loss could be about 300 Megawatts and this goes quite far.
