The Central Power Assemblies of God Church building at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region yesterday morning collapsed, killing one member and injuring over 40 others, who as at the time of going to press were in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and Atibie Government Hospital.
The sad incident occurred after some youth Group of the church numbering about 50 had gone for training on how to prepare pastries in the churchs main building and a big wall of the Okwahuman International School which is being shared with the church collapsed, after a heavy rainstorm, thereby falling on the church and damaging it completely.
Speaking in interview with the Ghana Palaver, the District Pastor of the church, Pastor Peter Abene, narrated that, before the unfortunate incident occurred, leadership of the church had complained to the Kwahu West Municipal Engineer of the threat the said wall was posing.
He said the engineer however ignored their complaint, saying that nothing would happen.
The church shares a wall with the school and as we saw that it was developing cracks, we reported to the Municipal engineer on several occasions which he inspected but said there was no cause for alarm and therefore urged the school to continue, he said.
The pastor said, the disaster would have been averted had the Municipal Engineer did the right thing by urging the school authorities to do the right thing.
He confirmed that the deceased, Mavis Dede Amewugah died upon arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after being referred by the Holy Family Hospital.
The police have since barricaded the place as part of the building left could be a death trap whilst investigating the whole issue. Arrest is however yet to be made as at the time of filing this story.
