Seven remand prisoners in the Denu cells in the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region have escaped, Friday dawn.
The prisoners said to have committed various offences escaped with 2 AK 47 rifles and 50 rounds of amunition.
Volta Region Police Commander King Yentumi Gyinai confirmed the cell break in an interview with Joy FM.
According to him, his men were on their usual duties when the prisoners broke cell, overpowered the police men and made away with the rifles.
He said the police have begun a hunt to rearrest the prisoners.
Barriers have been set up around major roads in the Municipality in a desperate bid to have them rearrested.
DCOP Gyinai said residents must report anybody they think looks suspicious to the police.
