Enoch Osafo Amankwah, a 26-year-old suspected armed robber believed to have shot and killed Lance Corporal Britwuma Iddi Briamah – a police officer who was stationed at the Accra Regional Police   Headquarters – in an alleged robbery operation three year ago, has finally been arrested.

Amankwah aka School Boy, allegedly pulled a pistol at the police officer when a team of law enforcement agents attempted to apprehend him at Ashaiman, where he (Amankwah) and another suspect were selling one of the vehicles they purportedly took away during the operation.

He is now in the custody of the Accra Regional police assisting in investigations, after his accomplice, identified as Godson Mante, 26, was arrested earlier and undergoing trial.

DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, addressing the media yesterday, said Osafo Amankwah was apprehended after three years of a mounted search for him.

He recalled that in 2012, a banker who had closed from work and was returning home was trailed by Amankwah and two other accomplices.

He said the gang attacked the banker at the gate of his house and his vehicle snatched from him.

While the matter was being investigated, DCOP Yohuno intimated, police had a tip-off that the vehicle was being offered for sale at Ashaiman by the suspects.

Plain cloth policemen, including Lance Corporal Iddi Braimah, were dispatched to the scene to feign interest in the vehicle to enable them arrest the sellers.

Whilst Lance Corporal Iddi Braimah was negotiating with the robbers, Amankwah suspected that the men were policemen and without any provocation, he pulled a pistol hidden in his pubic area and fired at him (Braimah).

Lance Corporal Braimah, who was shot in his chest, was rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but passed away the following day whilst on admission.

According to DCOP Yohuno, the police later had a tip-off that Amankwah and his accomplices were hiding at Ashiaman and in the course of their arrest they opened fire on them (police).

The police, he said, also opened fire and that led to the death of one of the armed robbers identified only as Katakul.

Godson Mante is undergoing trial but Amankwah again managed to escape arrest.

However, on July 19, 2015 the police managed to apprehend Amankwah, also known as Abudu Basit, from his hideout at Adenta, a suburb of Accra.

He would be sent to court soon for prosecution.
