A misunderstanding between a young man and a teenager at a wedding at Kapolhine, a suburb of Tamale, last Sunday later turned bizarre when the teenager stabbed the young man to death.

Sulemana Haruna, a 20-year-old Class Six pupil, is said to have stabbed Mohammed Hamidu,13, a school dropout, in the abdomen with a kitchen knife, but Hamidu managed to snatch the knife from Sulemana and stab him in the chest, resulting in his death.

The incident happened after Hamidu and a girlfriend had allegedly been attacked by Sulemana while Hamidu and the girl were on their way home after the wedding.

For committing the act, Hamidu has been remanded by the Tamale District Court, presided over by Mr Anthony Asaah, to reappear in a fortnight.

Background

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, who briefed the Daily Graphic on the incident, said Hamidu and his girlfriend attended the wedding at Kapolhine on August 23, 2015.

While Hamidu and the girlfriend were dancing, Sulemana stepped on their toes, which resulted in a fight. But they were later separated.

He said Sulemana, who was not pleased with Hamidu and the girlfriend’s reaction, later attacked them on their way home and stabbed Hamidu in the abdomen.

He said Hamidu managed to snatch the knife from Sulemana and stab him in the chest.

Mr Tetteh said Sulemana, who bled profusely, was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted but died a few minutes later.

He said a report was made to the police, who arrested the accused person.

The docket on the case has since been forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Office for advice for the accused to be formally committed for trial at the High Court.
