Many people have been rendered homeless in parts of Tamale following torrential rains in the early hours of yesterday.

The two-hour rainfall caused many homes and shops to be flooded, forcing most residents to abandon their sleep and flee for safety to nearby villages.

At the time the Ghanaian Times visited the scene, many of the residents were seen busily trying to retrieve their property from the floods.

The items destroyed by the floods included foodstuff and personal belongings such as dresses and electrical appliances.

Some buildings even collapsed during the torrential rains in the worse hit suburbs making it difficult for residents to retrieve their property.

Many of the suburbs, were completely cut off as some people had to be assisted to vacate their homes or cross to other parts of the metropolis.

Some of the residents interviewed by the Ghanaian Times, blamed the flooding on the abandoned road projects in the area.

A victim Mr. Issahaku Alidu told the Ghanaian Times that the abandoned road project, prevented the water from flowing freely into the drains, hence the floods.

He, therefore, appealed to the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to impress upon the contractor to complete the project in time in order to spare the residents of these frequent floods.

According to Mr. Alidu, yesterday’s flood in the community was the seventh within two months this year.

Another victim in an interview said the consistent flooding of the area was a burden on them and called on the authorities to do something about it.

At the time of filing the story, no official of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had visited the affected areas.

The worse affected areas included Bilpela, Kalaraga and Darrigohi-Fong all in the Tamale metropolis.
