Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Baba Jamal Ahmed is pleading with the striking nurses to be considerate with the government.
According to him, government is working around the clock to pay the junior nurses their salary arrears.
The unrest on the labour front is deepening as more health workers embark on an indefinite strike. The Coalition of unpaid Nurses and Midwives has decided to lay down their tools over unpaid salaries.
The affected health workers, numbering over 7,000 from across the country say they would only rescind their decision if government pays them their due in full.
The aggrieved workers have accused government of reneging on numerous promises to settle the arrears. Spokesperson for the group Douglas Adu-Fokuo said they can no longer bear the hardships inflicted on them by the situation.
“Last two months, we issued a statement that we wanted to strike and our authorities met and gave us assurances and so we decided to go back to work” he said.
But speaking on Asempa FM Monday, the Deputy Minister said the strikes and agitations will not help the situation. He said “strikes should be the last resort and so all those going on strikes should follow the right procedures”.
Baba Jamal who is also Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia Constituency assured the nurses that government is working around the clock to settle all the arrears. “They should consider negotiations and give us some time we will be able to resolve the issue” he concluded.
