The Agriculture sector in Ghana could soon benefit from the vast Israeli Agro-technology to help transform the industry. This came to light at the Agro-Technology Breakfast Dialogue organised by the embassy of Israel in Accra on Wednesday.

The dialogue sought to explore the possibility of combining relevant Israeli technology with the immense potential of agriculture in Ghana to transform commercial agriculture in the country.

Held under the theme “Transforming Ghanaian Agriculture - Possibilities for the Adoption of Israeli Technology", the dialogue had participants including major Business Advisory Service Providers and Consultants representing the brain behind many new Agro-ventures in the country. The MASHAV expert, Mr. Galy Shai, an Israeli agronomist with close to 60 years of practical experience was the main resource person for the dialogue. He took time to explain how Israel has been able to transform her agric sector through technology.

“Ghana has a huge potential in Agriculture, what is left is the technology needed to help one farmer to be able to feed a thousand people instead of ten”.  Said Mr. Shai who has spent a week in Wa teaching farmers how to plant and get good yields during the dry season.

The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Fiifi Kwetey was present at the dialogue and took time to answer pertinent questions concerning the current state of Agriculture in Ghana. Though he admitted there are challenges that farmers face in securing funding from banks, he also said that the problems in the Agric sector goes beyond funding.

“Israel transformed their agric sector not just because they had money and technology; the mindset, resolve and the will-power to work hard to change their situation played a major role in how far the state of Israel has come. These are traits that Ghanaians need to develop in order to transform all aspects of our nation building” Hon. Fiifi Kwetey added.

Israel is a success story in the adoption of technology and innovation to increase agricultural output. Israel pioneered and remains a world leader in drip irrigation, greenhouse farming and some of the most important modern technologies adopted in agriculture today.

Israeli ambassador to Ghana, H.E Ami Mehl thanked the participants and the Agric Minister for making the Agro-Technology Breakfast Dialogue a success and hopes it will have an impact on Ghana’s Agric sector.
