School heads have been reminded to make sure that religious rights of students are respected and protected in the interest of harmony and national cohesion.
Alhaji Braimah Boyong, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asante-Akim Central, said nobody should be disrespected, discriminated against or shabbily treated on account of their beliefs.
He was performing the ceremony for construction works to start on a GHȼ178,834.00 classroom block for the Konongo Islamic Basic School.
The three-classroom project is meant to ease congestion in the school and is being funded by the assembly from its Urban Development Grant.
It is expected to be ready within six months.
Alhaji Boyong used the occasion to encourage Muslim parents to do everything to give secular education to their kids in order to prevent their being left behind by globalization.
Enrolling their children in schools and providing them with the basic needs to help retain them, should become their top priority, he added.
Mr. Andrew Essuman, the Municipal Education Director, applauded the effort and strong contribution the Zongo communities in the area were making towards the development of education and asked that this was sustained.
He said the expectation was that all stakeholders would continue to work together to improve the school environment – make it both child and academic-friendly to enhance performance.
