More than 120 girls have dropped out of school in the Agotime-Ziope District in the Volta Region, past four years.
The girls from 11 and 16 years got pregnant whilst in school and failed to go back after childbirth.
Madam Millicent Buame, Girl Child Education Officer of the District Education Directorate who made this known described the situation as worrying.
She was addressing a day’s girl-child education durbar on early and forced marriage at Ziope, organised by Seek to Save Foundation with support from UNICEF.
Madam Buame noted that a good number of parents neglect their girl- children in the District, making them fall victim to commercial motorbike riders who offer the girls free ride on motorcycle to and from school and demand sex in return.
She said the practice is increasing early and forced marriages in the area as the girls are ending up as wives of the boys and men.
Madam Akpeloo said it is unfortunate that parental irresponsibility is gaining root in the District and urged the girls to set positive targets for themselves and desist from taking boyfriends whilst in school.
Mr Israel Aklorbortu, Regional Director of the Department of Children educated the girls on their rights and responsibilities and advised them to report any form of abuse to the police.
