A lone ranger police lance corporal, has shot and killed two suspected armed robbers, who were said to have exchanged fire at Asankare in the Ashanti region, during the Easter festivity.
The robbers, armed with a pump action gun and a pistol were said to have stormed the offices of a licensed cocoa buying company, and took away an amount of about Gh¢580,000, meant for workers salary.
The purchasing clerk of the company had just returned from the bank with the money and was about to pay the workers, when the robbers stormed the place, riding a motorbike, according to the police.
The Konongo Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Ohene Boadi Bossman said the two armed men reportedly ordered the workers to leave, entered the district officer’s office and took the money in a ‘Ghana must go’ bag. They used the Bompata road with the intention of escaping through Agogo, he said.
The lone police lance corporal from Bompata, according to the divisional commander, commandeered a landcruiser vehicle and chased the robbers.
A tyre of the motorbike burst on their way and so they hopped unto a taxi. Sensing danger, the taxi driver was said to have run into a ditch on their way, and in his attempt to escape, the robbers reportedly shot and killed him instantly.
They stopped another taxi, ordered the passengers out and this time, one of them decided to drive taking the taxi driver hostage at the back seat.
The police managed to close in at this point, gave a warning shot and also shot through the car. The driver reportedly lost control and veered off the road and hit a nearby house.
They then exchanged bullets with the police, but the police officer entered someone’s bedroom and shooting from behind the robbers, he was said to have killed them instantly.
