The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it has initiated investigations into an allegation of extortion of monies from teachers due for promotion in the Tema Metropolis.

The investigations by the Greater Accra Regional office and the Tema Metropolitan office of the GES is to establish the truth or otherwise of media reports alleging that some teachers due for promotion were charged GHC 10.00 each by an official of the Tema Metropolitan office before signing their forms.

Dr Peter Attafuah, Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, who was at the Tema Metropolitan office to investigate the issue, told the Ghana News Agency that the GES would take the necessary action after establishing the truth.

Dr Attafuah explained that some 31 teachers in the Metropolis who could not meet the deadline for the initial promotion were given the opportunity to submit between April 18 and 21 this year.

He added that it was during that submission that some teachers alleged that an officer called Mr Victor Mensah Bonsu alias Nana Bonsu was taking monies from them before processing their forms.

He said all those who submitted during the period had been invited by the Service to help in the investigation.

Mrs Margaret Frempong-Kore, Tema Metropolitan Education Director denied instructing the said officer to charge any monies.
