The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has destroyed large quantities of seized unwholesome, damaged and expired products with a street value of about $50, 000.

The items included pharmaceutical and alcoholic products, among others.

The items were uncovered during re-examination at various Customs checkpoints on the ‘Eastern Corridor’ during the Division’s operations.

Mr Emmanuel Adjei, the Chief Revenue Officer, told the GNA that the products were not safe for public consumption.

He said there was a provision for further legal actions against those, who imported the items, adding that, the destruction of the items was also expensive to the GRA.

He called on government to employ, train and equip them to monitor the various frontiers to check the influx of unwholesome products into the country.

He said they would continue to be vigilant to protect the health of consumers.

He said in line with this the Division had mounted a strong market surveillance to ensure that products on the market were wholesome and met quality standards.

He reminded consumers to properly examine products, including drugs to be assured of their quality and the expiry date before buying.

He cautioned those trading in illicit and banned goods to reform in their own interest or face the full rigours of the law.
