Special TV Licence Courts to start sitting every Thursday with effect from 4th January, 2018, has been approved by the Chief Justice.
They will adjudicate TV licence cases in all the regions, sitting from 8:30am to 4:00pm, a letter addressed to the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) by the Judiciary Secretary, Justice Alex Poku-Acheampong has said.
The letter dated December 11, was in response to an earlier one by the GBC to the CJ in November requesting for the designation of special courts to adjudicate TV licence cases.
The letter reads in part:
“We write to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 6th November, 2017 in respect of the above-mentioned subject.
“This is to inform you that the Honourable Lady Chief Justice has granted your request for the establishment of Special TV Licence Courts as indicated in the attached document.
“The Courts located in the regions are to sit every Thursday with effect from 4th January, 2018 until otherwise directed. The time for the Court sitting is 8:30am to 4:00pm.”

Ghanaians would soon be paying radio set licensing fees. All sorts of levies are being placed on the head of the poor Ghanaian. People in the villages cannot pay electricity bills let alone tv license fees. Then almost all of them will face prosecution .GOD help our homeland Ghana.
Those already paying monthly subscription for cable TV should not be forced wrongfully.
PLEASE EDUCATE THE PUBLIC. IS SOMEONE WHO IS PAYING FOR (DSTV) SUPPOSED TO PAY FOR (TV) LICENCE FEE?
YENTUAAAA! simple as ABCD. May be they will use RAMBO Security to enter peoples rooms and get them to pay but until then, this is one of the most ***barred word*** LAWS around. The CJ should rather concentrate her efforts towards helping the AG to recover all stolen monies by politicians instead of coming to burden us with the setting up of these special courts to collect the TV lisence. She can set up courts in all the MMDAs in Ghana but YENTUAAAA! period.
This law should be scrapped and dumped into the biggest dust bin behind the non-performing sanitation minister's house. I strongly believe that at the time this law was passed, only GBC existed so it was easy to collect the money. But now we have so many media houses who also pay taxes to the state. My question....who takes the license for who? Who benefits? Is it GBC or UTV or JOY NEWS? I bet you we shall mount the necessary opposition to this law and call it a NUISANCE TAX.
Akufu-Addo: The power to collect TV license fee stems from two military decrees passed by NLC and PNDC respectively which can only be considered anachronistic. The laws of Ghana include all those laws that have not been superseded by bills passed into law by the fourth republic. Since the two laws were decrees it will be prudent for the current cabinet to consider the issue and place a bill before parliament. If this is not done the revenue that would be collected would end up in the pockets of a few people. Cabinet must look for a more prudent way to collect the tv license fee. Collecting the fee at our ports through CEPS is a more elegant way. Akufo-Addo must ensure that all PNDC laws that have not been superseded by constitutional provisions of the fourth republic or bills passed by parliaments of the fourth republic are replaced.
I love NPP. Impunity, arrogance and disrespect is their character trait. You haven't seen anything yet. soon they will start taxing prostitutes and Gays. This are the Angels you voted for. Relax and enjoy. The day of judgement will soon come. Lets wait and see.Even Mugabe is gone. Their end will be miserable.
