The Ashanti Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is collaborating with the Ghana National Fire Service to provide 24-hour rescue and emergency services to the public.

Mr Kwabena Nsenkyire, the Regional Coordinator, said the move, was to ensure prompt response to disasters, to protect lives and property, especially in the rainy season.

Briefing the media in Kumasi, he said the Organisation had, consequently, provided an emergency line, ‘191’, to the public to enable the rescue team provide up-to-minute response to distress calls.

Mr Nsenkyire decried the recurrent flooding of some areas in the Region and other negative public attitudes, which put the lives of the citizenry in danger.

He attributed the development to the construction of illegal structures on water courses, which impede the free-flow of the water bodies.

The Regional NADMO Coordinator, hinted that two people residing at Abuakwa lost their lives recently as they got drowned in a stream when a section of the area got flooded.

As part of the exercise, he said, the NADMO had sought assistance from the various local assemblies to demolish all illegal structures sited on waterways.
