The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) task-force at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange on Monday morning forced some pedestrians who used unapproved routes to pick litter around the interchange.
Citi News’ Hanson Agyemang reported that some pedestrians walked through unauthorized places such as the lawn area under the interchange, and were forced to pay a fine or pick litter.
Offenders who were caught were initially charged GHC 50 as fine.In an interview with Citi News, Richard Mensah, Executive Secretary of the Task-force, explained that the action was taken since the Ghc50 spot fine has not deterred pedestrians.
“What we are doing is that, when we get you passing on the lawns there was a spot fine of Ghc 50, but this time around we have realized that people are willing to pay the money so they also want to reluctantly pass through the lawns. Passing though the lawns or unauthorized places we will make you sure you pick around wherever you are walking to serve as a deterrent to other people”.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has said that the vision of President Akuffo-Addo to make Accra the cleanest city by the end 2020 is on course.
He said the achievement will require the collective effort of citizens and all stakeholders.
“It is a vision which is achievable and doable when collectively we commit to it. It is the responsibility of all of us. …Once we have bought into the vision of the president and all of us are working towards it, we could possibly achieve it probably even before the end of the first term of the president, and I believe that we are doing so well,” he said.

Just picking up rubbish is not enough punishment for the offenders.Next time they add whipping and spraying of hot pepper water.Ghanaians are so much indiscipline.Pedestrian walkways have been constructed for us to walk through but people will choose to walk on the beautifully shaped lawns as if they don't they have conscience. What is wrong with us? Is it because of our orientation?
Lawns are there to beautify the city, why should a reasonable person walks through it.We need to keep our own country clean and beautiful, nobody will come and do it for us.Punishment for offenders should perpetuate.Well done AMA
I'm delighted at this development. Keep up the good work Governor. Don't relax the rules for anyone if they fall foul. Even if the Mayor himself falls foul of the law. We can even make a public spectacle of the Mayor picking refuse for walking on the lawn so as to serve as a deterrent.
I think we should roll out the national ID fast and record such unhealthy incidences on offenders record so they can be refused employments and credits when they apply. This will serve as deterrent to all. Its so in Europe
If you don't want to be treated that way do the right thing. No human rights matter in this.
Perfect idea. I think Ghanaians have been pampered for far too long in the name of democracy.Very soon we shall get the human right or human left activists to jump on the bandwagon to make noise that their rights have been violated. Next time they should add lashes to it.
perfect action
Too many villagers in Accra.walk on the walkway, finito!!!!
Where are the bins? It is the duty of AMA to provide bins and the responsibility of pedestrians to put waste in the bins or be charged for littering. Ghana is dirty because there are no BINS and no public toilets. I hear people steal bins so provide concrete bins (just standing culverts with bags). Littering everywhere and sweeping later with broom is what was done 100 years ago. Let's learn new habits. The Assemblies must exercise their power by ownibg up their responsibilities.
lawns are lawns. walkways have been constructed let them use it. too much jay walking in this country. meanwhile everyone wants to travel outside when they see how neat their streets are. we should practice same here.
