The African Union on Tuesday, expressed dismay after Italian Interior Minister and Deputy Premier, Matteo Salvini compared migrants to slaves.
"The African Union Commission expresses dismay at the comments made by the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Matteo Salvini, at a recent conference in Vienna at which he likened African immigrants to slaves," the AU said in a statement.
"It is the view of the African Union that name-calling will not resolve the migration challenges facing Africa and Europe".
Salvini had a verbal spat with Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn after reportedly saying "we don't need to have new slaves to replace the children we no longer produce" last week.
"In the interests of constructive engagement on the migration debate between the two continents, the African Union requests the Italian Deputy Prime Minister to retract his derogatory statement about African migrants and further urge Italy to emulate and support other European Union member states, like Spain, which have extended support and protection to migrants in distress, irrespective of their origin and legal status, before their admission status is determined," the AU said.

u.se.less Au, where u not there when lybia was selling our own like pigs
***barred word*** Au, where u not there when lybia was selling our own like pigs
It’s u.se.less for AU to act...have African leaders forgotten that they made the situation worse for us ? Mr Italia don’t worry we are slaves we will come brush the pigs teeth for some euros
he is not wrong, take Ghana for instance, a country with soo many people who do not want to work but make money.
But is the Minister wrong? ***barred word*** bunch of leaders.
He is right, well said, we have made our self to be treated so
Come on AU. What were you expecting him to say even though the deputy prime minister did not referred to Africa. Anyway I last read Brazil had seized 16 million in cash with some other valuables from a vice president of Angola and his entourage. More than 2/3 of his people are living in abject poverty and he has that money to be travelling around. These and many other thing s the AU should concern itself about and not expecting the deputy prime minister to render an apology and do a retraction of the truth he has spoken.
"we don't need to have new slaves to replace the children we no longer produce" last week. where is the mentioning of africans here? the arabs are also migrating and thats the one concern of salvini so yy do AU accept it as reference to it. mtcheww
Do not blame him for saying what he said. When African leaders travel abroad with millions of dollars of the state money, leaving their people poor then we give room for these comments. The people live in poor conditions, poor social amenities. Yet when the African leaders send their children to schools abroad, even they move their wives and children to live abroad. Who finances these expenses? Whose money do they use for their children's education abroad? Therefore the daring ones struggle their way abroad in the hope of finding a better life. It is near impossible for a citizen to even acquire a passport. Blame African leaders, not this man. He loses nothing because he is comfortable where he is. He doesn't have to struggle to live let alone travel to another country. Our mentality also is a factor. How many of us here in Ghana buy even Ghana rice? Few. We want Thai rice, chinese rice, etc. etc. Yet our rice is of a better quality. We want foreign made, brazilian hair, this and that and all sorts. Let's wake up from slumber and wake our leader up too.
