The first National Kente week celebration has been launched in Accra by The National Kente Week Planning Committee under the auspices of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture.

Speaking on the theme "Celebrating our Heritage: A Majestic New Boost for Sustaining the Ghanaian kente Tradition and Industry in the 21st Century," the Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture, Honourable Alexander Asum-Ahensah stated that, the current global dispensation calls for a thorough assessment of our strengths to be able to create opportunities for the youth.

He said it has become necessary that both national and international avenues of marketing are created for kente products to enable Ghana favourably benefit from the increasing income of the global creative industry market.

The Director of Royal Protocol Service who are the main event organizers, Nana Abena Konadu Badu said, the week long celebration which will run from the 23rd to the 31st of July, 2011 seeks to sustain and intensify awareness on the cherished legacy of glory, uniqueness, national pride as well as a sense of belonging associated with the kente fabric nation wide.

Events outlined for the week she said are, a kente exhibition and weaving competition; what do you know competition for schools on Kente and Adinkra symbols and a national kente dinner dance.
