A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rubbished reports that founder of the party, Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings has formed a new political party.
Citifmonline.com, a credible online news portal, this afternoon claimed, the new party to be called National Democratic Party (NDP) is yet to be given total clearance by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, but is gathering the numbers from grassroots across the country.
According to the online news portal citing some political watchers' views, this latest move by the former president is likely to split the ruling party.
However, NDC Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo and a staunch supporter of the Rawlingses, Hon Michael Teye Nyaunu, says the story should be treated with disdain.
Speaking in an interview with Xfm 95.1 shortly after the story broke out, the man who strongly supported the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings in her bid to become the flag bearer of the NDC stated that such reports are only meant to slur the reputation of the partys founder.
Is that the way we form a political party? Do you form a new political party in your bedroom?... It is not true, it is this Ben Ephson and Bature who have been given some money and they are talking the way they are talking. All efforts are consciously being made to discredit Rawlings; so they are determined to go any length to do that, Hon Teye Nyaunu retorted.
At any rate if the Former President will form his own party, and so what? People like Teye Nyaunu and the rest will support him; if he so wishes, he however added.
Even though Hon Teye Nyaunu conceded that the crisis in the ruling party is worsening by the day, he argues these are not reasons enough to push the Ex-President out from a party he had formed, adding, I do not think Rawlings himself is happy, but that does not mean he is going to form his own party. His Excellency Rawlings is a man; and he has his principles. In fact, if he wants to do it, he can come out and say he will do it; and he will get people like us to support him. But as it stands now, it is either here nor there the man has not made any statement.
