There was jubilation at the main Takoradi market when women at the place heard on radio last Thursday that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, had named Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, an economist, as his running mate for the 2012 general elections.

Spontaneously, the numerous market women gathered at a spot and paraded through the alleys in the market jumping, blowing whistles and singing patriotic songs such as ‘Nana Addo aye adze; Nyansanyi wo dze nye hen dze” to wit ‘Nana Addo, you have done well; Wise man, your choice is our choice”.

According to Madam Esther Nyantakyi, spokesperson for the Market Women Group of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Takoradi, they took that step in solidarity with Nana Addo’s choice which they described as the best.

She said the market women in Takoradi had since 2009 been praying to God for the party’s prospective flagbearer and running mate and that Nana Addo and Bawumia had been the names ringing bells in their hearts for the 2012 general elections.

“We would have been sad and disappointed if Nana Akufo-Addo in consultation with the National Executive Council had chosen any other running mate apart from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a candidate that God has blessed to partner Nana to move the country forward from January 2013,” she added amidst great applause from the women.

She intimated that the two gentlemen possessed the leadership qualities that could transform the current economy.

Madam Nyantakyi told the women that the time was ripe for them to do vigorous campaigning to win more members into the party adding “embrace our brothers and sisters from the NDC with love for the majority of them are heavy-laden and need rest in the NPP.”

An overwhelming majority of the jubilant market women who had not gone through the biometric registration exercise rushed to various centres to get registered last Friday afternoon, DAILY GUIDE observed.

“We wanted to register next week, but because of Dr. Bawumia, we must do it quickly to avert any disappointment. We are going to tell our friends and relatives who are 18 years and above to also do so and vote for the Elephant party,” a group of women told this paper.

Madam Ekua Minsiwa, a cassava seller at the market and member of the NPP, told DAILY GUIDE that her dream was to see NPP in power next year so that as a single parent, her two children in Senior High School could enjoy Nana Akufo-Addo’s free secondary education.
