President John Dramani Mahama will leave for the 67th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Saturday, September 22, 2012.

He will lead a team of powerful government officials which will include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni, and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Benjamin Kunbour.

The General Assembly opens in New York on September 18 and ends on October 5.

The key issues on the agenda for the meeting include the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), The role of Mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, Climate change and sustainable development, Food Security, disarmament and UN reforms.

Briefing the media in Accra, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Chris Kpodo, said the general debate of the assembly would serve as a forum to boost global solidarity and build consensus in the search for solutions to the challenges facing individual states and the international community as a whole.

He said the general debate of the assembly would provide an opportunity for member states to discuss global issues, exchange views and express concerns as well as make proposals on relevant issues.

He added that Ghana is among the few developing countries adjudged to be making impressive progress towards achieving the MDGs by 2015.

Speaking on disarmament, he said the country was committed to complete nuclear disarmament and the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The deputy minister made it clear that government is committed to democracy and the rule of law, hence the government will conduct a free fair transparent and violent free elections come December.
