Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has underscored the need for the Electoral Commission to remain above public suspicion.

The ex-President also reminded the electoral body it would in future give an account of its service to Ghanaians and must be guided by it.

Mr. Kufuor’s comments come in the wake of bribery allegations and court cases that have bedeviled the Electoral Commission in the past few days.

He was speaking to journalists when the only Independent Presidential candidate for the 2012 elections, Joseph Osei Yeboah, paid a courtesy call on him at his residence on Wednesday.

He said: “I don’t want to work on allegations, but I seriously would plead with the people entrusted with the unique position of the Electoral Commission under the Constitution of Ghana. They are not unaccountable. In due course, the Electoral Commission will know whether they served the country as the Constitution intended it to serve the people.”

“If any person is entrusted with this very high position to help give government to the people and they begin to play hanky-panky or work to bias anything, if they don’t account for it today, they will account for it tomorrow. I am concerned that the right thing should be done,” he added.
