One of Ghana’s Deputy Ministers of Information and Media relations, Mr. Murtala Mohammed has paid glowing tribute to former Libyan Leader, late Muammar Gaddafi for what he described as his efforts toward uniting the African Continent.

Murtala Muhammed said the unification of Africa would have been fast tracked if African Leaders had bought into the ideals proposed by the late Libyan leader at the 2007 AU summit in Ghana.

The Deputy Minister’s comment comes in the wake of concerns over how Africa could improve its attempts at achieving a meaningful continental unity as the African Union celebrates 50 years of existence.

Speaking to the media at the flagstaff house in Accra on Friday May 24, 2013, Murtala Mohammed said the Continent would have been in better circumstances by now, if Gaddafi’s contemporaries had shared his vision.

He said: “I admit that Gaddafi played a significant role, I as the Secretary General of the All African Students Union participated in several fora organised by Gaddafi and we made our position clear even when we had the AU summit in 2007 in Ghana”.

Murtala Muhammed added that: “indeed there were some divisions for which reason we couldn’t achieve the union government that we were talking about, those who wanted it now and those who didn’t want it at that time”.

“But we all agree that Gaddafi wasn’t popular among his peers but I believe that if that position was supported, other African leaders would have agreed to what he was proposing”, he observed.

He noted that the union government that Africa appears to be fighting for is not just important but essential to the human and economic development of the Continent.
