A leader is defined by the Encarta dictionary as someone who guides or directs others. It therefore stands to reason that he lives above reproach by not exhibiting bias in dealing with his subjects but be fair and firm.
However, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John has come under intense criticism from members of his own party for making pronouncements they believe could bring division into the biggest opposition party in Ghana.
According to Sir John, Nana Akufo-Addo must be retained as the flagbearer of the NPP. This, in view would save the cash trapped party money because the 2008 and 2012 presidential candidate has already been marketed well to Ghanaians.
Though many have called for the resignation of the NPPs Chief Scribe, Dr. Richard Anane, a former Road and Transport Minister in the erstwhile kufour Administration has stated that as a leader of the party, he has no right to make pronouncements.
Sir John has no right to make that proclamation he did. If he wants to resign his position as the General Secretary of the party to take up a new portfolio as a spokesperson for the one he claims must be made the presidential candidate, then nothing stops him. Apart from him resigning, and assuming the role of a spokesperson of the person he wants as a flagbearer, he does not have the right to make such pronouncements.
if it happens that way it sends a bad signal to the followers of the party. It could make them have no trust for that leader because he has shown the tendency of being bias. So when you hold a position like that, you dont speak like that. Dr. Anane argued.
Speaking in a telephone interview from Kampala, Uganda, Dr. Anane made it clear that Sir John had erred in the pronouncement of retaining Nana Akufo-Addo as flagbearer but stopped short of calling for his resignation.
No one would stop him if he wishes to quit his post to become a spokesperson. But otherwise he must be careful not to talk like that next time, the former Minister of State told Adom Fm.
