Research has suggested that a growing number of basic school pupils between the ages of 13 and 15 smoke cigarettes across the country.
In view of this, the Ghana Health Service in collaboration with Vision for Alternative Development, VALD, an NGO is embarking on a sensitisation programme in schools and communities on the harmful effects of tobacco and the law governing its control in the country.
Speaking at a programme in Accra, a representative of the Disease Control Department of the Ghana Health Service, Divine Logo, said 40% of Senior High and Junior High School students believe cigarette smoking is a way to make more friends.
He said this is a misconception which must not be allowed to fester in young minds.
