President Dramani Mahama said on Tuesday that government would initiate measures that would enable the Ghana Cedi to regain its strength against the United States dollar and other major currencies.

He hinted, however, that some of those measures would temporarily make Ghanaians "uncomfortable" and appealed to the citizenry to bear with government to chart the path for economic recovery that would bring about prosperity for all.

President Mahama made these remarks when he addressed security officers at the Castle, Osu, during their annual West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA) celebration.

The programme, which attracted hundreds of military and Police Officers serving at the Presidency, as well as other civilians working in the security outfits, offered them the opportunity to socialize amongst themselves after a long year of activity in the field.

President Mahama said in spite of the economic challenges the country was experiencing, government would continue to play its role in providing the security agencies with the necessary equipment for them to be on top of their job.

He said he had directed the Chief of Staff to organise regular durbars and fora for interaction with the Presidency and the explanation of government policies that would keep security personnel in touch with government policies.

On the international scene, President Mahama gave the assurance that government would continue to contribute to bring peace to war-torn countries on the African continent and beyond, and indicated that government would increase its contingent in Mali from 520 to 850 to help stem the volatile situation in that sister West African country.

Mr Prosper Douglas Bani, Chief of Staff, and security commanders also attended the programme.
