Some high profile individuals in Ghana may soon fall victim to targeted killings, security NGO West African Network for Peace Building, (WANEP-Ghana) has warned.

Also warning about the possibility of the security situation worsening, WANEP-Ghana said at its quarterly National Human Security Early warning brief in Tamale, the Northern regional capital that the situation must be instantly brought under control.

According to the brief, the situation could worsen anxiety among Ghanaians as the 2016 general elections approach.

In the first quarter of the year, WANEP-Ghana’s brief said the country got plagued by 27 armed attacks including homicides and suicides.

Crunching down the numbers, the NGO said 17 incidents of homicide related cases were recorded at Sagnarigu, Aboabo, Savelugu, all in the Northern Region; as well as Manet Gardens and Joma, near Ablekuma, Tema Community Four all in the Greater Accra. Two suspects were arrested.

WANEP-Ghana said there appeared to be some correlation between the violence and the current deplorable economic situation.

Its National Network Coordinator Issac Bayor said: “Even though Ghana has recorded impressive economic growth the question on the lips of many citizens is when the economic gains would translate to improved living standard of the people especially as rising level of frustration owing to economic hardship, unemployment, and cost of living endures.”

He said death threats were also rife within the period. Mr Bayor cited threats issued to the Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana at Kasoa and to the chief of Pakyi No. 1 near Obuasi in the Ashanti region as examples.

The report said beside armed attacks, accidents and labour unrest also featured prominently among the topmost threats to the country’s security.
