The list of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) External Branch endorsements for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo continues to grow, as Canada, Belgium, France, Italy, Nigeria and Norway formally threw their support behind the former Attorney General and Foreign Minister, in the upcoming Presidential Primaries Special Delegates Congress (SEC), scheduled for Sunday, 31st August, 2014.

The SEC would be followed by the National Delegates’ Congress on 18th October, 2014, to finalise the nomination of the NPP’s Presidential Candidate for the 2016 Elections from among the aspirants who could continue beyond the SEC. Nana Akufo-Addo is tipped to win the nomination and, the endorsements coming in from around the country and the globe indicate, he is poised to win it in an emphatic fashion.

The USA, Japan, China, Denmark and Australia Branches have not remained indifferent to this exercise and massively endorsed Nana Akufo-Addo. For instance, the USA poll gave 96.67% to Nana Akufo-Addo and 3.33% for Alan Kyerematen while China gave Nana 85.4% support to Nana Akufo-Addo.

Seven aspirants are vying for the NPP Flagbearer post, to represent the party in the December 2016 Presidential Election. They are Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, Kofi Konadu Apraku, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Kofi Osei Ameyaw, and Joe Ghartey.

To give meaning to “power emanating from the people and by the people and for the people”, members of the NPP External Branches adopted a consensus approach to endorsing candidates during the NPP Presidential Primaries. Special meetings and telephone conferences were therefore held for members to express their choice of candidates.

The Branches’ chosen Delegates are then strictly chosen and instructed to vote for the most preferred candidate rather than leaving individual Delegates to vote their personal choices.

So far, with results tallied from 10 out of 14 NPP External Branch endorsements, Nana Akufo-Addo leads with a massive 93%, followed by former Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, with 4%. The former MP for Mfanstiman West Mr. Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, MP for Esikado-Ketan Mr. Joe Ghartey and former Offinso North MP, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku gained 1% each of the overseas endorsements, with MP for Mampong, Mr. Francis Addai-Nimoh and MP for Asuogyaman Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw obtaining 0% each.

Three branches, Japan, Ireland and Denmark are keeping their preferred choice of candidates to their chest, although reliable sources indicate that Nana Akufo-Addo is also the clear preferred candidate there too. These endorsements come at a time when other NPP flagbearer aspirants and their campaign Teams panicked over earlier public endorsements of Nana Akufo-Addo by the UK and Germany Branches.
