The Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has attributed his current position as the President of the World Alliance of Mayors and leaders of Africa and of African descent to the respect the world has for President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.

According to AMA Boss, President Mahama commands a lot of respect internationally with his good leadership abilities as that has automatically transferred and somehow influenced his [Oko’s] position as the president of mayors.

In a letter written to President John Mahama by the Deputy Executive Director of Global Alliance, Djibril Diallo, he spelt out what informed the group’s decision to make Dr. Vanderpuije president.

The letter to the president states that “the Honorable Lord Mayor, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuije has been a strong and constant advocate for the values and vision of the Global Alliance, which serves to focus the efforts of leaders at all levels of government and in intergovernmental organizations towards improving the situation of Africans and people of African descent”.

It also states that “since the formation of the Global alliance by consensus of delegates to the Third World Summit of Mayors and Leaders from Africa and of African Descent held in September 2014 in the Republic of Colombia, Dr. Vanderpuije’s knowledge and experience as Chief Executive of Accra, will be a strong asset to the Global Alliance, and are therefore certain that it will thrive under his leadership”.

Emphasizing on his new leadership role as president of mayors, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije said the job is good for Ghana as the flag of the country is raised higher, creating developmental breeding grounds for the various districts and municipals in the country.

“We have a common agenda for the Education sector, local development upgrading, housing and transportations; we are looking for solutions to address these problems because we intend to bring development to the doorsteps of every Ghanaian…..we have to realize that the President of Ghana has a lot of respect internationally and that respect has transferred to others; the leadership of President Mahama has reached far internationally and so that explains why I was chosen over many leaders in the world to lead the World Alliance of mayors and leaders of Africa and of African descent…..this is good for Ghana and the flag of Ghana is raised higher”, he stated on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show.
