It has emerged that the mother of Charles Antwi, the 36-year old convicted for carrying gun without lawful excuse to the President’s church with the intention of killing him is a National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporter.

66-year old Afua Agyapongmaah is said to be someone who followed the activities of the party.

“…I can also talk of my mum (Afua Agyapongmaah) who sometime ago was an NDC supporter…,” brother of the failed assassin, Kwame Opoku revealed on Adom FM’s Evening News on Thursday, 30th June, 2015.

Charles Antwi who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for carrying gun without lawful excuse is however said to be someone who has never meddled in Ghana politics.

“I can tell my brother’s political affiliation, he hardly even talks for you to know his political affiliation, he does not even meddle in politics and political activities…,” Mr. Poku said further.

The issue of the political leaning of the gunman became the subject of discussion after his incarceration when known NDC leaders including the party’s chairman for the Lower Manya Krobo, David Walter Hormena and the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia claimed elements within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) were behind the failed assassination attempt.

“I don’t believe that Charles man is insane, I believe it is a calculated attempt by the NPP just to eliminate President Mahama. They are same people claiming the man is mad just to shift our attention to their mad motive” Homena asserted.

The NDC national scribe on the hand claimed that he would not rule out the unseen hands of the opposition elements in a rather grand plot aimed at eliminating the President.

“If a madman will follow a demonstration organized by the NPP, and we wake up to hear that there is another madman has gone all the way to Mahama’s church to assassinate him, then who is to blame?” Asiedu Nketia insinuated.

However, when asked if any political party could persuade his younger brother to undertake such an act, Kwame Opoku said he wasn’t sure if that could be possible as the incarcerated Charles is never known to have engaged in politics.

“After travelling to Libya and Italy, he said he could not understand the way things work here and constantly muted of becoming Ghana’s President and that is all I can say…,” Opoku said further.

Kwame Opoku could not however reveal if his mother ever held certain positions in the local NDC party.
