A former head of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) says all political parties are given an opportunity during the display of the provisional voters’ register to get ineligible names deleted from the roll.

He, therefore, says raising concerns with the register is a sign that the parties do not attach seriousness to the exhibition of the provisional register. Ghana’s largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), last Tuesday suggested that at least 76,286 names of Togolese appear in the current register. The party, therefore, called on the EC to initiate moves for a new register ahead of the 2016 elections.

But speaking on TV3 on Thursday, retired chief Justice of the Supreme Court VCRAC Crabbe said the display of the register ahead of every major election is to have people who have problems with it get names of unqualified persons deleted.

“The whole purpose of displaying the provisional register is for us to have a clean register,” he emphasised. The EC is said to engage the parties at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Friday, August 21 to delve deeper into NPP’s suggestions.
