A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ayisi Boateng has backed the decision by the National Executive Council (NEC) to suspend its National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

“He was disrespectful to the elders of the party as well as the committee and as a leader he shouldn’t have done that…we need discipline in the party” Ayisi Boateng told Kwami Sefa Kayi on Monday.

The NPP last Friday, suspended its National Chairman indefinitely.

According to Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, C.K. Tedam, Mr Afoko was ‘arrogant’ and showed the ‘fathers and mothers’ of the party no respect.

“We’ve been asking him [Paul Afoko] to be in his own judgment. Because of that we sent it to the right place—the Disciplinary Committee. They invited Paul Afoko just like the Council of Elders invited him; and he refused. I went to talk to him myself; he refused to come. We wrote to him officially so that he will reply officially because our idea is to bring peace and harmony to the party.

“As fathers and mothers of the party, it was not our intention to impeach him because we thought that will take time and it will disorganise the party a little so we asked him to come and explain why he is not cooperating,” Mr Tedam explained.

Adding his voice to this, Ayisi Boateng said strong measures needed to be taken to bring discipline to the party.

According to him, the National Executive Council and the Disciplinary committee could not just sit and watch Paul Afoko disrespect them.

“He was called upon severally to come and he didn’t and as a leader you need to set an example. We need discipline in the party…as a leader, when something goes wrong and you are called upon, you need to come. But once he decides that he won’t come; nothing can change his mind but that is also not right” Ayisi Boateng added.
