Assembly members of the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti region have rejected the president’s nominee for the Municipal Chief Executive position.
Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh whose nomination sparked some disturbances even in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) inthe region fell short of the 2/3rds majority required for him to be confirmed as the MCE.
Out of the 66 assembly members who voted, 25 voted ‘YES’ while 41 voted ‘NO’.
Mr. Ponkoh's re-nomincation by the President was met with protests from people from his own party including the Parliamentary aspirant for Ejisu Juabeng.
They argued that the outspoken former MCE brought the name of NDC into disrupt thus his re-nomination could negatively affect their electoral fortunes in the 2016 general elections.
Some members of the ruling party even invoked the dreaded Antoa Nyama deity on anyone who confirms Yamoah Ponkoh's nomination.
The results therefore compels President John Mahama to nominate another person for the job.
