Mr Kweku Tanikyi-Kessie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Evalue-Gwira-Ajomoro Constituency in the Western Region, has categorically denied reports that he has insulted the people of Axim.

In a statement issued through his special aid, Daniel Armah, the MP said he had never attacked anyone verbally anywhere in the constituency.

The statement further said: "The office of the Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira constituency, Kweku Tanikyi-Kessie, and parliamentary candidate for NDC in the 2016 polls has been drawn to a news item published by ghanaweb and some media houses on April 21, 2016, to the effect that MP has insulted the people of Axim, with particular reference to the people of Apewosika, a fishing community within Axim.

"This is false and baseless. The MP has done no such thing, either privately or in the public, as being widely circulated in some sections of the media”.

The statement, therefore, warned those behind the rumours to desist from those provocative acts or face legal action.

It will be recalled that Mr Tanikyi-Kessie has not had things easy in the constituency in recent times following the party’s protracted primaries.

Initially, he had issues with the District Chief Executive (DCE) in the area, as well as some executives of the NDC, and his popularity appears to be dwindling rather fast.

When the unfortunate news of his insult of the people of Axim – the political hotbed of the area – made the rounds, the people immediately demanded an unqualified apology from him while others threatened to vote against him in the November 7 elections.

Observers believe it is good he has come out to clear the air, but whether or not that will calm the nerves of the people remains to be seen.
