Even before he is sworn into office as a substantive Member of Parliament, the MP-elect for Zabzugu in the Northern Region, Umar Alhassan who stood on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is being challenged as unfit to represent the people of Zabzugu because he holds dual citizenship.
Some youth of the constituency have threatened to take the matter up in court if he does not honourably vacate the position for more qualified people to represent them in parliament.
Umar is said to have an American citizenship after relocating to that country in 1993 and has not denounced his American citizenship before contesting the elections.
He won the seat which was occupied by John JabaahBennam, the incumbent MP who stood on NPP ticket.
According to the youth, they have credible evidence that Umar Alhassan held top positions in America while his entire family have naturalised.
“We want the appropriate authorities to look into this before we get a problem like what happened to the people ofBawku Central where a former MP, AdamuSakande was jailed by the court for holding dual citizenship before contesting to become an MP,” Jacob Nikimuala, one of the concerned youth told the DAILY GUIDE.

this is ***barred word***, please understand Dual Citizenship and it's political impact, even President Obama faced similar issues and had to prove otherwise when Trump was alleging he wasn't an American. As a matter of fact it's the lack of understand and discernment in issues like this that has caused us to be 'underdeveloped', if you come and run a business in Ghana who cares about citizenship, your business is not greater than the government no matter what, your business isn't greater than Ghanaian powers (political). You shouldn't control Ghanaian powers if you are not truly Ghanaian, i don't know where in the 'developed' world this happens, forget about blood this is a democratic political system if it's about blood then we should have been in a mornachy.
They should proceed to court if the have evidence. Mr. Adamu Sakande was convicted, tossed out of parliament and jailed five years; fair and square. Until this bogus law is change, he has to be booked if the allegation is true. You can't do it to Adamu Sakande and let others go scot free.
These cases should have been looked at by the electoral commission before he ( Mr Abaako) filed. Proper investigation should be made and I entreat the people of Zabzugu to remain calm and follow due process of the law for we are one. Thank u
Only yesterday the President was conferring citizenship on a group of Diasporans highlighting the value the government attaches to the skills they bring to the table. And here we are hounding and jailing full-blooded Ghanaians who are willing to serve their motherland just because they have dual citizenship. How ***barred word*** can we be as a country? This MP elect came to Ghana in 1993 and has been offering his services to Ghanaians all this while. Nobody refused his services during this period even though he is alleged to have dual citizenship. What changed? ***barred word*** country. No wonder we are so underdeveloped.
That's a good move. The MP of Kwame Danso must also be investigated for holding two nationalities - as a Ghanaian and an American.
