Majority Leader Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu has disclosed former President John Mahama begged Parliament to reverse its decision to pay him a monthly rent allowance upon retirement and rather opted for his official residence as his retirement home.
Kyei Mensah Bonsu in an interview with Abusua FM said President Mahama pleaded that Parliament gave him a permanent accommodation after he hands over. There has been widespread public outcry surrounding the accommodation of former President Mahama since leaving office as President on January 7, 2017.
A Presidential Emoluments committee Mahama formed before handing over, had recommended that the exiting president be paid 40% of his salary as rent allowance. But after Parliament accepted this recommendation, President John Mahama caused fresh changes in the recommendation which was later brought back to parliament.
According to Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, “we gathered that the president has made some entreaties to elderly statesmen in the country to intervene to have an official residence.”
In the new recommendations, the President is to be given a permanent place of abode after leaving office.
”Don’t forget the NPP was still in the Minority” Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu said as Parliament approved this recommendation.

I think "begged" is too low key word to describe former president. I as much as i dont agree that he should keep that property; i feel its too pathetic to use that for Ghana's president. Anyway , Obama is going to relocate into a rented home two miles away from the white house ryt after the inauguration on 20th. soooo much lessons there.
So what is Kyei Mensah telling us? Mahama pleaded for what? And you changed what that law actually says to the exclusive benefit of Mahama? It doesn't matter if the NPP was still in minority in parliament; you could have staged a walk out and not be part of the decision process if indeed the minority thought the country was being handed a raw deal by the NDC; you've done that before. Now what you are telling us is the case, then clearly parliament failed the people of Ghana and you must apologise to the entire country for this embarrassent. You were scratching each others back because you were also benefitting from the end of service entitlements. Very dissapointing.
S3 wani awu Kyei Mensah.. The guy will leave
I have always not TRUSTED THIS Mensah -Bonsu !!!!!! ; this guy is a kriminal and thiff ;once the rabbit contradicts himself then you know he is throwing a load of cow dung and lying ; how can you claim Jon Mahama was 'pleading' ; how can Jon Mahama plead when the man has properties all over Accra ; his brothers Ibrahim Mahama has so many houses that Jon Mahama could go and stay there ;does that make sense to you ; the Presidency of Ghana is a not and avenue to create or grab properties for the family of Jon Mahama besides Jon Mahama has properties in Accra of which he could easily go anstay there ; this same man as the President gave cars and houses to a number of people including Akua Donkor so why on earth does this BOle Thiff Ghanaians should give him another free house to live in ; what about his deal with the Enbraerer helicopter in which he inflated the prices and creamed off the balance ; what did Jon Mahama do with all the monies he recieved as his pension ; JON MAHAMA IS JUST A GREEDY NORTNER FROM BOLE !!!!!!!
"Kyei Mensah Bonsu in an interview with Abusua FM said President Mahama pleaded that Parliament gave him a permanent accommodation after he hands over" Mr Mensah what do u mean by plead? we know our former president well he won't beg for a two bedroom house. ah ba
Shame to parliament and the majority. How can u propose and agree to allow our former president leave in a rented accommodation after several years of service to Ghana. Ignoring all constitutional provisions just to embarrass him.
MAHAMA DON,T BE SIIIII...LY. JUST LEAVE THE RESIDENCE BEFORE WE EJECT YOU BY FORCE. THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING OOOOOO. YOU GAVE A HOUSE TO AKUA DONKOR. YOU CAN GO AND STAY WITH HER. DON,T BE GREEEEEEDY. WE ARE GETTING READY TO TACKLE THE DUBAI HOTEL. BELIEVE ME THAT HOTEL WILL BE SOLD BY AUCTION.
Oh Ghana.... Hmmm l heard the former president has buried some money at his residents oooooo. This is the main reason he does not want to move out. African politicians never change,...
