Member of Parliament for Juaboso Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has threatened court action if the nomination of Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister-designate Otiko Afisa Djaba is approval by parliament on Tuesday February 7.
This follows her failure to honour her national service obligation as required by the country’s laws. The development, which generated huge controversy, led to members of the Minority in parliament vehemently opposing her approval for that portfolio on Friday February 3 on the floor of the house.
Subsequently Ms Djaba’s approval was deferred to Tuesday February 7.
Speaking to Class News, Mr Akandoh said he would not hesitate to head to the court if parliament approved her nomination.
“The law says that you cannot be employed by anybody, you can even not be self-employed [if you have not done national service]. National service is only nine months, at most one year; she should go and do her national service. Even the law courts will not condone, will not permit the breach of a statute. If they try [to approve her], we will all go to court,” he stated.
Ms Djaba incurred the wrath of Minority MPs for her refusal to apologise for describing former President John Mahama as “evil”, “wicked” and “an embarrassment” to people of the regions up north when she appeared before the Appointments Committee to be vetted for her ministerial position.

What has national service got to do with this? The woman stood her ground and I expect women to throw their support behind her to help address issues facing women and children. A lot of MPs and other public servants have not completed their national service. Do you want to tell me they should resign and go back to complete their service before they can hold public office? GIVE US A BREAK you shallow minded NDC people. I pray that Otiko succeed with her ministry. GOD BLESS GHANA AND THE PRESIDENT NANA ADDO DANKWAH
