Former flagbearer of the defunct Independent People’s Party (IPP) now Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) Percival Kofi Akpaloo believes the beleaguered former COCOBOD CEO Dr Stephen Kwabena Opuni deserves the GH¢70,000 monthly salary.
He wondered why the technical trainer of the Black Stars will earn $50,000 a month but same cannot be said about the head of an institution like COCOBOD.
“If you want to be fair and sincere do a background check as to how much CEOs from Vodafone, MTN, Stanchart, etc are earning in Ghana. You will find out there’s nothing wrong paying a CEO of COCOBOD $15,000 a month.
Let’s move away from pettiness politics”, he told mynewsgh.com in an exclusive interview.
The new Board Chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, on Tuesday made revelations about how much the CEO of COCOBOD receives as monthly salary describing it as “outrageous” which ought to be slashed.
“COCOBOD is a state institution. It cannot be taken out of the context of the overall remuneration structure and within the executive and those ancillary services,” Mr. Owusu-Agyeman asserted on Citi Eyewitness News.
Mr. Owusu-Agyeman has indicated that even after the planned cut in salaries, some of the top management will still earn more that the highest paid article 71 office holders which is pegged at GH¢ 22,000.
“For me, it is absolutely unthinkable that the gross salary of the Chief Executive Officer should be in the neighbourhood of GH¢70,000 to GH¢ 75,000 a month, and the net is about G GH¢55, 000 to GH¢ 57,000 a month.
If you even discount this by 50 percent, it would still be higher than anybody under article 71 of the constitution,” he noted.
The new COCOBOD Chair said the fact that the salary of the COCOBOD Chief Executive Officer dwarfed the President’s salary was problematic given that “at the end of the day, we have to be able to say that the work that is being done is getting reasonable levels of remuneration commensurate with the work that they do, and also within the context of the Ghanaian economy.”

Hmmmmm. Good evening folks. Life is really not fair. It is really unthinkable for one CEO to be paid about Ghc 75,000 a month. It is equally unthinkable to pay one coach about Ghc 300, 000 a month. When Akwasi Appiah was the coach of the black stars, he was earning about 200, 000 a month but we did not see anything wrong. Is the black stars a private organization. Can Hon Hackman Owusu Agyemang tell is how much Kwame Sarpong, Isaac Osei and Tony Fofie who were all appointed by the npp between 2001 and 2013 earned as monthly salary? Is Hackman aware that the monthly salary of the CEO of ssnit is above Ghc 75,000? Is ssnit a private institution.? This cheap populist approach to governance must stop. Its a shame for a new ceo to begin on this tangent.
Have we checked how much the CEOs of ECG, Ghana Water, VRA, Grico, etc takes? this is peanut. Have you checked how much the CEOs of Ecobank, Zenith Bank, etc takes? this is peanut. $15,000 salary for a CEO is pea nut
I now believe if the NPP government can handle all these wastes, one factory, one district and one village one dam is even on the lower side. They can do more. What a waste.
That is why Ghana would continue to be unproductive. These high salaries only make people lazy and they fail to think about how to make countries productive. Why should one Ghanaian worker earn more than what 70 teachers earn in a month. Meanwhile they go to the same market and have the same responsibilities. Are our policy makers thinking at all?????
I'm utterly disappointed in this man who has been wanting to be the president of Ghana. With this kind of argument how can he be a good president? He does not even understand the different beteew private and public. Poor you!
And this moron wanted to be president of Ghana? What people don't understand is that the resources of the nation is for the benefit of all Ghanaians and not few technocrats and politicians. There are a lot of civil servants and private workers in Ghana who are earning less that 500 Ghana a month, yet we have politicians and so called experts taking monies which could pay about 100 laborers and messengers as well as national service personnel a month. One person take all this money, while people don't have portable water, people can't pay fees, people don't have roads, people don't have food to eat and can't pay their utility bills. And here we have a moron supporting this plain wickedness.
How much do we pay our PMS and even the President? Go away if your pettiness and concentrate on delivering on your campaign promises. Shame
Let's be serious. How much do blackstar players take as winning bonuses. Even the coach afterall what do they contribute to the economy. Pls be sincere !!
AKPALOO IS ANOTHER THIIIIIF IN WAITING. HE IS JUST NOT GETTING IT. HOW CAN A COMPANY LIKE THE COCOBOD THAT IS RUNNING AT A LOSS BE PAYING ITS CEO THIS TYPE OF MONEY. ? YOUR ARGUMENT CAN ONLY HOLD IF COCOBOD IS MAKING PROFIT AND NOT RUNNING AT A LOSS.
YOU CAN NEVER BE PRESIDENT BECAUSE YOU DON'T THINK BIG. YOUR WISDOM IS LOW.
