Deputy General Secretary for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Lawson has stated categorically that the Akufo-Addo government can never implement the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
According to him, if this current government is serious about implementing the Free SHS policy as promised, the policy should include free school uniforms, free sandals and everything required in education.
The Minister of Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Tuesday May 16, 2017, said “only students who pass BECE will have the opportunity to enjoy the government’s free SHS policy in September.”
Spelling out the details of the policy “so that no one in Ghana is left in any doubts”, President Akufo-Addo added that in addition to tuition which is already free, there will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals, and day students will get a meal at school for free.”
“Free SHS will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level. I also want to state clearly again that we have a well-thought-out plan that involves the building of new public Senior High Schools and cluster public Senior High Schools,” he added.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, George Lawson indicated that Akufo-Addo government has missed the concept of the Free SHS policy; thus, the concept is failed if the policy only covers those who will make it to the Senior High Schools.
“They said it is only brilliant students and this means only the affluent can benefit from the Free SHS policy and the poor students will not get the opportunity. It should not be pass BECE or they don’t understand the English word ‘Free’,” he argued.
“Once they said free, school uniform, sandals and everything should be provided. It is not only the fees but it should include everything concerning education. They have not implemented it; it is only a promise and until it is fulfilled. Promise is not a fulfilment,” he averred.
He however said that even though those who don’t pass should not go to school, the meaning of pass is subjective to deny students from attaining the Free SHS policy.

You are just ***barred word***. No wonder you are an NDC man minus Mr Rawlings and family. How could you ever talk like that? Even in developed countries where education is free parents provide such things for their children. You can not be ***barred word*** like.
The word 'NEVER' must not come out your ***barred word*** mouths but you never learn!!!
Just look at a human being's face, like a carved wood.all the ndc wants is to see nana and npp fail.they only want power to create loot and steal.as for ndc, they that which Satan himself can't do
Looking at this guys face, am convinced nothing better will come out of his mouth. Truly, some of these NDC guys don't have ghana at heart.
Aaaba! Has this man just woken up from his long sleep? Or he also wants to be heard like Koku Anyidoho? Mr. Lawson has just realised Koku is making himself known to NDC voters so he has also started to reveal his ignorance. I wonder if these people understand what goes on in the country. Mr. Lawson your NDC government had the opportunity to implement the free school scheme, what did you do about it? You promised us one payment of NHIS, what happened to that promise? Please if you do not have any thoughtful argument don't just open your mouth. Just go back to the dark hole and rest.
Sometimes I wonder if certain so called politicians say things just to make their voices heard and if so if they truly think before opening their mouths. Even in the days of Kwame Nkrumah when the population of Ghana was lower than it is today and the British leaving Ghana with substantial foreign reserves and with no debt, free education did not provide the the things that this mentally challenged individual is spouting about. Even a country like UK does not provide those things within their educational system and university education is not free how much more a country like Ghana who is financially challenged.
