The managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has asked the Akufo-Addo-led government to explain to parents that the free SHS policy being implemented now is only for new entrants because the promise was free SHS and not free ‘first year SHS’.
“What the NPP promised was free education for all students of the senior high school not the 1st year and not the second years but all students of the senior high school. It is possible that this is the beginning and that subsequently, second years and third years will be added on. But as at now the promise of making education free for all students of senior high school has not been achieved...it’s in the interest of government to state this because some parents of second and third year believe that their children are going to enjoy free education and if it is not explained, it will create problems for the headmasters and headmistresses. What is being implemented now is free education for only new entrants of the senior high schools” he said during a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji.
The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) much touted free Senior High School policy will be fully rolled out on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.
President Akufo-Addo delivering a speech at the 60th Anniversary celebration and the Speech and Prize Giving Day of Okuapeman School in Akropong in the Eastern Region said: “by free SHS we mean that in addition to tuition which is already free, there will be no admission fee, no library fee, no science centre fee, no computer lab fee, no examination fee, and no utility fee; there will be free text books, free boarding and free meals, and day students will get a meal at school for free. Free SHS will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level. I also want to state clearly again that we have a well-thought out plan that involves the building of new public senior high schools and cluster public senior high schools.”

It would has been a surprise if Pratt has said something else about this policy. It is within his right to say whatever he wants to. Even if the policy affects only the first years,is it not Free? No matter what the government would do ,people would still find something to say about it. The should remain focused and ensure that the policy takes off smoothly.
When Rawlings started the JSS Program why did he start with class six and not the old form four. I was in form three by then...when four year SSS was introduced it started with JSS three...Mr. Kwasi Pratt. every program starts with those who have not been there yet. People like you will destroyed Ghana.
You start any commitment with first step,it wasn't free before both the first to the third year student, and now God willing is free, which is starting from first year .At least their have being a great achievement policy for the first time in Ghana history . Free education is free for all . God bless our mother Ghana and make that stay for good . Amen
I wonder when these sycophants and bootlickers will be truthful to themselves? When the JSS and SSS was introduced; did it start with all students or just those entering first year? Ayalolo buses did not start across the country. Not all areas in Accra have ayalolo bus service and yet sycophants like Kwesi Pratt are silent on that one.
For once can't you be objective at your age you don't need anybody to tell you to be statesman and talk about things that will bring development to the nation. With the opportunities you've gotten in life, how many students in your village were you able to help????? Have you considered the number of students in your village who will benefit from this policy. You are very selfish. Commonsense will tell you that thousand miles of a journey step with a step. Politics has blindfold you.
For me lets give the government the benefit of the doubt..i vote for them to see my tax reduce, free shs which i think start..one district one million ..one dam..one factory.. but its just barely one year...i hope the future is bright if not i cant vote for them again...but at the end they do well woow. So God help them and God help Ghana.
Interesting point. Read more news at ghana-news.net
Those in their 3rd and 2nd year, are they not part of secondry school students? Nana please be fairly leader.
Uncle Kwesi what is your problem? He has to start from somewhere then it moves to the rest. Look at the number of secondary schools we have in Ghana. Your plan is to see him fail then u come out and say I said it. Please let's help this man move the country forward. Can't you see he got some beautiful plans for the country? Ad3n.
