The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, feels displeased by comments by a member of the main opposition National Democratic Congress, Abraham Amaliba, that Ghana would burn if the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, is removed from office.
Abraham Amaliba, a private Legal Practitioner is on record to have accused the Akufo-Addo led government of using the system to harass Mrs Osei, a situation he claims does not augur well for the stability of the country.
But Mr. Antwi-Boasiako has responded to the “reckless” statement by NDC scribe insisting that he might have misplaced his thinking cap when he granted the interview.
“That impetuous Amaliba might have lost his thinking cap. I don’t believe his thinking cap works properly. How can you wish Ghana burns? Does he know what a burning country looks like? Sometimes, stupidity can make certain people behave in an unacceptable way and that is what has caught up with him. This reckless kid should be told in the face to think about Ghana and not to hastily use the media as his platform to spew rubbish statements”, Chairman Wontumi said.
The Chairperson of the EC is expected to answer for six allegations out of the 27 accusations levelled against her by her two deputies Amadu Sulley (in charge of Operations), and Georgina Amankwa (in charge of Corporate Services).
On Monday, December 11, she appeared before the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court after the President forwarded a petition by Forson Ampofoh and Godsway Dzado, both drivers at the EC office for her impeachment in relation to alleged corruption and mismanagement.
Her two deputies, are to also answer for their alleged roles in the disappearance of some GHS480,000 from the EC’s Endowment Fund, among other allegations.
Mrs Osei, who was present at the hearing with her lawyer explained that she has not been officially served with the petition. She has therefore written to the presidency to furnish her with a copy of the petition.
She has also written to the Judicial Service to provide her with reasons why she has been asked to appear before the committee even though she has not officially received a copy of the petition to be privy to the accusations levelled against her.
As the matter developed to this stage, Abraham Amaliba called on bodies like CDD and Occupy Ghana and individuals like Mr. Emile Short and Professor Martey to add their voices to the matter to calm tempers.
“Where are the CDDs? Where are the Occupy Ghanas? If it were to be the NDC government all these people would be speaking by now. Where is Emile Short? Where is Professor Martey? This country will burn and we will see where all of us will be and so they should continue doing it”, Amaliba said.
It is on the back of his comment that Chairman Wontumi also suggested that public flogging should be introduced as means to punish politicians like "Amaliba and others who wish for the downfall of Ghana."
“Such comments from Amaliba is a wake up call on us all to start flogging political actors who say evil things about Ghana. He doesn’t love the country and must be forced to think- he doesn’t think at all”, Chairman Wontumi said.
