The Akufo-Addo government must not allow the Komenda Sugar factory to “rot” away just because it was constructed by the Mahama administration, former Minister of Trade and Industry Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has said.
The $35million factory built with an Indian Exim Bank facility has been left dormant in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem municipality of the Central Region despite the fact that it was opened for use by the Mahama administration in May 2016, ahead of the December elections in that year.
Speaking to Class News about the situation, Mr Spio-Garbrah said it would be prudent for the government to rope the factory into its 1 district-1 factory programme rather than leave it to waste away.
“If we are going to have 1 district-1 factory, and the factory that already exists, and which machinery is already brand new and pristine, is being allowed to deteriorate and to rot, because I don’t think any maintenance is being carried out on the machine, this is what the NPP did to the more than 300 factories that Kwame Nkrumah built; they left the 300 factories to rot and then eventually tried to sell some of them and the last ones that were left, are the ones that the PNDC and the NDC inherited.
“So, we are pleading with the NPP government; the fact that the factory was established under the NDC administration should not be the reason to allow the factory to rot,” Mr Spio-Garbrah said.

Is this man call Spio is serious? he was not in Ghana during the administration of NDC under John Atta Mills and Mahama when they abandoned Asokore Mampong housing Project that John Agyekum Kuffour started? What kind of Hypocrisy on the highest level? Sometimes NDC guys think that Ghanaians don't think or what? Please, Spio stop that kind of Kids talks ok. we are not blind
OH GHANA OH GHANA. WASTE NOT WANT NOT. WE ARE DOOMED. WE ARE DOOMED TO IMPORT SUGAR AND RELATED PRODUCTS FOREVER. RICE. MAIZE. EGGS. WE CANNOT DO ANYTHING FOR OURSELVES. OUR FORMER COLONIAL MASTERS LAUGH. THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONQUER US BY DIVIDING US. WE HAVE BECOME VERY GOOD AT THE BLAME GAME. BABYLON. WE WILL NEVER UNITE TO DO ANYTHING GOOD FOR OURSELVES. THE SUGAR FACTORY IN THE CENTRAL REGION IS FOR GHANAIANS. THE PARTY DOES NOT BELONG TO ANY POLITICAL PARTY. WE ARE JUST VERY SORRY NEGROES. WE ARE PITIFUL.
You know the World Bank seat for NDC is gone so you want NPP to get the project on track and claim credit. please wait till you are in power. NPP would do the project when there is a sound feasibility studies done and raw materials available for factory .
With such minds and attitude when shall Ghana ever get to its destination. Indeed we have a long way to go.
Spio Garbrah must be ashamed of himself for spewing out lies. Did I hear him say that the NPP collapsed 300 factories established by Nkrumah? Has he decided to deliberately ignore the fact that it was his master J. J. Rawlings and his PNDC that divested or liquidated over 300 factories built by Nkrumah? This empty head with a fake doctorate (apologies to Koku Anyidoho) has become a disgrace to we Fantis. The earlier he shuts his ***barred word*** mouth the better for him.
The Komenda Sugar factory for me is the biggest lie and propaganda Mahama and his NDC had made that they cannot run away from. I remember when they finished setting up the factory they PRODUCED some sugar and I thought it was going to continue. What a big lie to the people of Komenda and the country at large. Eiii NDC. Hmmm.
surprisingly, the educated people in Ghana tell so much lies than the illiterate. NDC, where is the sugarcane? Ghanaians are not blind oooo, we are not.
I beg Nana and the NPP should not do anything on this so called sugar factory , when President Kuffour started the HOUSING PROJECT did they continue when they took over why must theirs be different.
Sometimes I find it difficult to understand why some people you consider well educated and intelligent become dumb, fuulish and refuse to use their coconuts the moment they join the NDC. Spio, let Ghanaians know the type of feasibility studies you and the NDC did before you built this factory. Then we shall appreciate your present concerns. I used to admire you a lot until you became Minister of Trade and Industry under Mahama.
IS THIS SPIO GABRAH SERIOUS AT ALL. ? WHY DIDNT ADVISE HIS NDC GOVERNMENT. BY TAGGING THE FACTORY 1D1F WILL NOT CHANGED THE FACT THAT THE NDC DID NOT DO ANY FEASIBILITY REPORTS BEFORE CITING THE FACTORY. HE FACTORY WAS FOR PROPAGANDA PURPOSES AND NOT FOR PRODUCING SUGAR. HOW CAN THESE NDC GROUP OF POLITICIANS BE WASTING GHANA"s RESOURCES JUST BECAUSE OF CHOP CHOP.
