A group calling itself the Berekumman Citizens Association (BCA) has bemoaned the lack of development in the Berekum Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region.

According to the group, the municipality had seen little development in the past two decades, and expressed disgust about the nature of the roads in the area.

Speaking to the DAILY HERITAGE, Mr Kwame Kyeremeh, chairman, Accountability Committee, BCA, questioned the authorities about the use and disbursement of the common fund meant for the development of the municipality.

Mr Kyeremeh said, “Our common fund for the Municipality comes in every year but we can’t tell what the assembly uses it for.”

He said though they have two Members of Parliament, the municipality still lacks some basic needs and infrastructural development.

Poor roads

Mr Kyeremeh further told the paper that the municipality had been bedeviled with poor road networks, which he explained, had affected the economic activities of the area.

He added that after acquiring trucks and equipment by the previous leaders of the assembly to construct and maintain the roads in the country, they have been mismanaged and left to rot.

“The past assembly spent lots of money to buy heavy equipment but the trucks were highly mismanaged and have been parked,” he told the paper.

He further indicated that the nature of the road had caused serious health issues to the locals, saying, “the dust from the road is killing us here.”

About the association

With their motto ‘Nkabom ne Mpuntuo’ which means unity and development, the main motive of BCA is to contribute resources and take on some of the developmental projects in the Berekum city.

The Association is in three main parts, one for citizens in the Diaspora such as Germany, United Kingdom, United States of America and Spain. The second is for citizens who are in Ghana but not living in Berekum, and finally, people living in Berekum dubbed ‘Berekum Dwellers Association.’
