The controversy surrounding the nomination of Mrs Jean Mensa as the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission is needless, according to the Seasoned Journalist and Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday announced the nomination of the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Mrs. Jean Mensa, as the Electoral Commissioner of Ghana.
Her nomination has been welcomed with agitation and disapproval from the opposition political parties especially the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to them, her appointment is to secure the victory of the ruling party; the NPP in the 2020 elections.
However, contributing to a panel discussion on Wednesday's edition of Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo', the renowned journalist said: "we are only recycling; same old story. It is needless".
After giving a historical background on nomination of EC heads over the years, Kweku Baako said instead of the hullabaloo, the focus should be on whether Mrs Jean Mensa can do the work and whether President Akufo-Addo was acting within his rights.
"I have no problem with the decision to appoint; as long as it was done in consonance with the constitution, I am okay," he added.
