The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye has called for the arrest of all members of the Coalition of Concern NPP Youth who violently attacked and forcefully removed the Chief Executive Officer of Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. David Zawumya Kolbila from office on Monday.

Condemning the act in no uncertain terms, Nana Boakye called on the police to take every step necessary to bring sanity to the facility.

According to him, the action of the youth smacks of lawlessness, thus they should be made to face the full rigour of the law.

Brazen Attack

In what can best be described as a brazen attack that shocked and frightened hospital staff and health seekers, over five unarmed members of the group stormed boldly into the only referral facility in the country’s north. They burst into the CEO’s office and locked it up after ejecting him alongside a director of administration and a female secretary.

The party vigilante force accused the CEO of adopting a habit of issuing threats to staff, engaging in procurement breaches, neglecting the purchase of key hospital consumables such as examination gloves, needles and syringes, and illegal transfer of drugs to stock his private hospital and incompetence.

They also alleged that under Dr Akolbila’s watch, the Tamale Teaching Hospital keeps deteriorating.

Among other issues, they also accused him of travelling to China without handing over to the next in command.

In a video of the attack, the attackers were seen asking the CEO and other occupants of the office to pack and leave. The CEO was made to clear his table and paraded out down the three-story complex amidst unrestrained verbal denigrations.

Not Sanctioned by the NPP Youth Wing

Commenting on the issue in an interview with Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Okay Fm’s "Ade Akye Abia" Programme, Nana B, as he is affectionately called, explained that the party is distancing itself from the act and condemn it in no uncertain terms.

The police should arrest them and make them face the full rigours of the law....This was not sanctioned by the NPP youth wing, the party knows nothing about this development.

“We cannot continue to condone these acts of lawlessness by the youth who will always hide under the cover of the NDC and the NPP to be fomenting trouble and so they should be arrested.

"....the CEO has been asked to return to work...and i have entreated the youth to remain calm....I have also dispatched the youth organizer who was in Accra for a meeting to meet with the youth group to make sure that calm prevails in the area," he intimated.

"Series of Demonstrations"

The group, however, says they will not rest until the man is officially replaced.

Speaking on same platform, Spokesperson for the group, Baba Alhassan said they will mount series of demonstrations until the President, Nana Akufo-Adoo kicks the current CEO out of office and brings in a more capable person to head the facility.

"....the CEO has not been proactive in dispensing of his duties....The hospital lacks certain basics like gloves and even paracetamol which is needed for its daily operations. He awards contracts to himself without following procurement processes. We can not allow people to die just like that....We will act until something is done," he fumed.

On February 23, 2017, a group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), known as the Northern Young Patriots in a similar fashion demanded the immediate dismissal of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong.

The group’s Chairman, Bashiru Baba at a news conference in Tamale, accused Dr. Akambong of superintending over corruption, nepotism and abuse of human rights of staff.

They also claimed that Dr. Prosper Akambong reduced the major referral health facility to a death trap.
